4WD on your Grand Vitara

Until this moment, all Suzuki 4x4 models - including the GV - have been equipped with part-time 4WD systems. The system used on our GV's, called "Drive Select 4x4", is somewhat different from the systems used on the older Samurai and Vitara models.

Unlike older Suzuki 4WD's, the GV has no (manual) locking hubs. So the front axles are always rotating, driven by the rotation of the front wheels. However, the GV is equipped with a front differential, that is engaged using pressured air. You will find the air pump above the front bumper.

When you drive in 2WD and shift to 4WD-H, the t-case will engage the front driveshaft. The air pump wil pressurize the front differential, therefore engaging it. Since there are no locking hubs present, you will now be in 4WD.
